Classroom of students stretching

It's not too late to book Healthy Breaks for your classes this fall. Healthy Breaks are short 10-minute stretch breaks or mindfulness breaks, right in your classroom. They are easy, accessible, and conducted by student leaders for other students.

Our evaluations show that 98 per cent of participants want a Healthy Break in their class. Student testimonials from this semester include, "Keep it up. It's a very good tool and helpful for students, especially during such a stressful life phase. I really enjoyed it!" and "This was very helpful, there should be more sessions like this in classes."

Healthy Breaks are easy to schedule. Just reserve a time through our booking site or email at cihw@humber.ca.

These are the highlights of this month’s new and improved features in Blackboard Ultra that will be live Thursday, December 5. The most relevant updates are related to four key areas:

  • Instructional design;
  • Communication and collaboration;
  • Flexible grading;
  • and the Gradebook.

Instructional Design

Navigation Added for LTI and SCORM Items within Learning Modules

Instructors use learning modules to guide student progress through diverse types of course content. For easier navigation, students can now select arrows to the left and right of LTI or SCORM items to move through learning modules.

AI Design Assistant Rubric Generation Upgraded from GPT-3.5 to GPT-4o mini

Anthology regularly reviews the AI models used within the AI Design Assistant. New models are trained on more data and can complete a broader range of tasks at a higher speed than older models. Information in new models is more up to date, which makes their outputs more accurate. Also, new models are less likely to require multiple submissions to generate content. To benefit from these improvements, Anthology is starting to switch over the AI Design Assistant tools from GPT-3.5 to GPT-4o mini.

Communication & Collaboration

Discussion Enhancement: New Post Indicator

Anthology has added a "New" indicator that displays next to posts and replies that a user has not yet accessed. This helps direct engagement by making new discussion activity easier to find and access.

Flexible Grading

Improvements for late submissions

To help instructors quickly identify late submissions in the attempt banner, late submissions now have a Late indicator. Anthology also updated the wording from Submitted late <date> to Submitted <date>.

Gradebook

Grade override improvements

To increase transparency when overriding grades, Anthology has added an Override indicator to overridden grades on the Grades & Participation screen for Discussions. Anthology also implemented the Undo Override workflow on the Discussion grading interface, mimicking the Undo Override workflow in the Journal grading interface.

The full list of November updates is available on the Blackboard Help Center website.

Black Heritage Month 2025 text poster

Greetings from Black Student Support and Engagement (BSSE) and the Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB),

As we approach the end of the semester and prepare for the new year, we are thrilled to unveil this year’s theme for Black Heritage Month, "Roots & Rhythms: Celebrating Black Culture, Creativity, and Community." This theme is a celebration of the profound influence of Black culture, the boundless creativity within the Black community, and the strength found in unity and shared experiences.

Join us at North Campus on Tuesday, February 4, for the opening ceremonies at 12 p.m., a lively and inspiring kickoff featuring music, performances, and reflections on the legacy and future of Black culture. This special event will set the stage for a month filled with connection, celebration, and inspiration.

Throughout February, BSSE has prepared a dynamic calendar of events to highlight the spirit of Roots & Rhythms. Faculty and staff are encouraged to host their own events that align with this year’s theme and to share them on the BSSE Black Heritage 365 Calendar.

For those interested in co-hosting an event with BSSE or the Office of EDIB, please reach out to us at bsse@humber.ca by Friday, January 10, 2025.

Let’s make this Black Heritage Month a vibrant celebration of culture, creativity, and community. We can’t wait to see the Humber community come together to honour the legacies that ground us and the rhythms that move us forward. See you there!

We are pleased to announce that Humber Polytechnic has partnered with PayMyTuition to offer a secure payment platform for our students to manage their tuition and school-related fees. PayMyTuition has been developed by a leading Financial Technology Firm – MTFX – specifically for educational institutions with the school’s administration and reconciliation processes in mind.

PayMyTuition provides numerous online dashboards, expansive reporting modules, and opportunities to integrate payments directly into our administrative processes, easing the burden of reconciliation and administration for tuition payments.

We believe that this new system will greatly benefit our students by providing them with more flexibility and convenience in managing their tuition payments. As part of our ongoing commitment to improving the overall student experience at Humber, this new process has been designed to be a seamless experience through the MyHumber student portal to serve all their account and payment needs in one place.

Students will benefit from the flexibility PayMyTuition offers, such as:

  • Tuition and fees can be funded in both Canadian or local currency, with international payers having offerings in 100+ currencies from anywhere in the world.
  • International students receive the best exchange rate, increasing their savings.
  • Payments can be initiated, funded and tracked online by students.
  • Funds are received within 24-72 hours of sent payments.
  • Offers an easy-to-use, secure online platform, available anytime.
  • Multilingual customer service support is provided for students and parents 24/7.

Payment options include credit cards, INTERAC e-transfer and more. International students will have secure options for in-country payments as well as from outside of Canada. Approved refund requests will also be managed through PayMyTuition.

Students will access PayMyTuition through their MyHumber account:

MyHumber > Student > Student Account & Fees > Payment and Account Centre.

Once logged in, students will be redirected to the PayMyTuition portal. They will be able to:

  • Review their account summary
  • Pay their tuition deposit and tuition balance, as well as any other fees owing
  • View scholarships, bursaries and other funding that has been applied to their account
  • Track the progress of any approved refund request.

Students will also receive email notifications directly from PayMyTuition with account and payment updates.

Please note that international students will continue to have the option to use Flywire for international payments. At this time, all payment plans will also be facilitated through the Flywire platform. Students enrolled in a payment plan will be advised to review their payment plan account for their most current balance of fees.

The web will be updated with screenshots and instructions to support the user experience. For more information, you can visit humber.ca/payment-options. For international payment options, visit humber.ca/international/fees.

An ALS Accommodation Letter may indicate an alternative assessment be provided for presentations for a variety of reasons based on the impact of the disability. When this accommodation is listed on the letter, we encourage faculty to consider the following approach:

  • Review the course learning outcomes.
  • Determine essential requirements associated with the assessment and how they connect with the overall learning outcomes for the course.
  • Determine how the selection of an oral presentation as the format for the assessment is connected to the learning outcome(s). Can the learning outcomes be met by use of an alternative format assessment?
  • If the learning outcome(s) can be met through use of a different assessment format, provide that as an option for the learner. Ensure the learner is provided sufficient time to complete the assessment once it is provided to them.
  • In some cases, faculty have accommodated learners may be able to one-to-one with faculty or record themselves speaking and submit a video.
  • When an alternative assessment has been identified, consider providing all learners with the option to select either of the two assessments. This approach is a Universal Design for Learning best practice.

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about accommodating learners with disabilities.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

This Giving Tuesday, choose exactly how you would like to make your impact and we'll double your gift!

Giving Tuesday is an annual day of giving that takes place this coming December 3. This is a chance for the entire Humber community to come together and show our support for Humber students.

We are also pleased to announce that the Humber Giving Hub is now available. This hub allows you to choose the fund you are most interested in supporting to make your impact here at Humber.

Also – every donation made between now and Giving Tuesday will be matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling your impact!

Another way to show your support this Giving Tuesday is to come out for Humber’s Got Talent at noon in the LinkX Lounge (Room LX110 at North Campus). Registration for faculty and staff is only $5 and will support Humber’s Student Food Security Fund. $5 is the equivalent of the daily subsidy provided to a student in need through this fund. Register today.

You can also make a tax-receiptable donation in honour of this event and in support of the Student Food Security Fund.

All donations made to this fund until Giving Tuesday will also be matched dollar-for-dollar.
