I am delighted to announce the appointment of Nicola Winstanley as the new Associate Dean, Journalists & Writers, in the Faculty of Media & Creative Arts.

Nicola is an award-winning educator with a deep commitment to student success and engagement. As a Media Foundation professor and co-ordinator, she designed curriculum to meet the needs of young learners exploring academic pathways and mature learners changing careers. She was an early adopter of Making Accessible Media, incorporating it into core program curriculum to prepare learners for the evolving demands of industry. Media Foundation graduates frequently pursue additional credentials at Humber, which is testament to the strength of Nicola’s efforts inside and outside the classroom. The College recognized Nicola’s overall contributions to Humber with a 2018 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

Outside of Humber, Nicola maintains an active writing practice. Though she is known primarily as the author of six critically acclaimed children’s books—including the Governor General’s Award-nominated How to Give Your Cat a Bath in Five Easy Steps—Nicola also writes poetry, fiction and comix for adults. Her newest book, the short story collection Smoke, is forthcoming from Wolsak & Wynn in May 2024.

Nicola holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of British Columbia and an MA in English specializing in Renaissance literature from the University of Auckland. She further developed her expertise in Shakespeare over four years of doctoral studies at the University of Toronto.

Nicola’s first day as Associate Dean will be November 13, 2023. Please join me in welcoming her to her new role.

We often hear: “Yes, disability accommodations exist at Humber and UGH, but how will students manage in the real world?”

The Real-World Spotlight series consists of interviews conducted by Accessible Learning Services (ALS) with Humber and UGH alumni with disabilities who accessed ALS and other campus supports.

This week we are featuring Aaron Inocencio - Advertising and Graphic Design diploma at Humber.

The goal of the series is to highlight how learners with disabilities transition into the workforce and their experiences navigating accommodations. In celebration of October being National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we will post a unique Student Spotlight for the next three weeks.

The interviews focused on: the accommodations they found helpful as a Humber and UGH learner, the support they receive from their current employers, how they handled disclosure of their disability, and how Humber and UGH can help future learners with disabilities.

Help to promote the Humber Student Success Survey (HSSS).

At Humber, student success and retention are institutional priorities; understanding our students is essential to provide focus for student success initiatives. Every year, three in four incoming students successfully complete their first year. However, one in four leave the college within the first year. It is imperative that Humber is able to identify students at risk of attrition and initiate timely interventions.

The HSSS is one means of identifying students at risk. The survey is administered each year to students in all semesters. The four purposes of the survey are:

  • To understand our diverse student population in terms of sociodemographic and other factors (e.g., culture and ethnicity, sexual identity, disabilities) so that we can assess the extent to which we are meeting their needs;
  • To understand students’ academic and career goals and the extent to which we are meeting them;
  • To identify students who may be at risk of attrition; and
  • To gain a broad understanding of students’ support needs to allow for service planning and resource allocation.

All students will receive their personal survey through email on Thursday, October 26. Students will also receive a personalized invitation to complete the survey on their Blackboard ‘Activity Stream’ titled ‘Important: Humber Student Success Survey’. The survey will remain open until Sunday, November 12.

Please help us to ensure a strong response to this survey by encouraging students in all years and full-time programs to complete the survey so that we can continue to make a positive impact in their success.

Thank you in advance for your support!

The Lakeshore Library is looking to freshen up its Little Free Library collections. Located outside Residence and near Tim Horton's, our Little Free Libraries provide an outdoor book-sharing spot where people can take or leave books for free. They encourage reading, sharing, and a sense of community in public spaces.

We're asking for donations of new or used fiction and non-fiction books to boost the Little Free Library collections and offer a wider variety of reading material for Humber students and the community. Popular genres include both classic and contemporary literature (especially Young Adult (YA) fiction, mysteries and thrillers, romance), cookbooks, biographies, and self-help books.

Book donations can be conveniently dropped off at either the North or Lakeshore Campus libraries. Questions can be directed to Michelle Hamilton (Lakeshore Library Fulfillment Technician).

Join us in sharing the love of reading!

We are an interdisciplinary Humber team working on a Pillar 3 Innovative Learning project titled, Teaching Students To Research & Write With Integrity In The Digital Age – A Faculty Program. Our project goal is to create a toolkit for faculty who wish to learn more about artificial intelligence and ways to engage with it in teaching and learning settings.

We also want to curate faculty/instructor exemplars that demonstrate how artificial intelligence can be used wisely in higher education. If you are a faculty/instructor at Humber who has engaged your students in using artificial intelligence to learn, we would love to hear from you. Our hope is to have these examples available for others to consider as they look to operationalize artificial intelligence in their courses.

If you have an example to share or want more information about this request, please contact the Pillar 3 Project lead, Jennie Miron at jennie.miron@humber.ca.
