Pride Speaker Series: Tina Zafreen Alam

This session will be the second in the Humber Pride Speaker Series. This session is being led by Tina Zafreen Alam.

About this event:

Ways to Read a Poem for the People: This talk will present and apply June Jordan's Guidelines for Critiquing a Poem from her Poetry for the People workshop. We will read and speak about three poems by contemporary or modern LGBTQ Indigenous, Black poets, and other poets of colour. Open to everyone curious about reading more poetry.

Registration is mandatory for this event and can be done here.

This webinar will be the second of the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre's Annual Pride Speaker Series. This webinar will take place over Zoom. The link to the webinar will be sent via email before the event.

Tina Zafreen Alam is a diasporic Bangladeshi poet who doesn’t believe in space, time, or borders. Currently based in Toronto, she loves J Dilla and Wong Kar-Wai, and completed her MFA in Writing at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. You can find her poems in Panorama: A Journal of Intelligent Travel, Cosmonauts Avenue, FreezeRay Poetry, Solstice Literary Magazine, and elsewhere. When she is not writing, she is reading, listening to music, dancing, cheering on her only known sibling Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors, communing with the city's squirrels or looking at pictures of her niece and nephew, Amaya and Ducky.

The countdown is on! Humber’s virtual convocation celebrating Spring 2021 graduates is coming up on Thursday, June 17 at 2 p.m. EDT. As the special day approaches, grads have been invited to submit a photo or video on the Humber Convocation "Get Social” page at humber.ca/admissions/convocation/get-social for a chance to be featured on-screen at the ceremony on June 17.

Grads can also submit a shoutout on Instagram or Twitter to their family, friends and classmates using #HumberGrad and the Humber community (that means you!) are welcome to submit any special messages too. Shoutouts will be posted on the Humber Convocation website.

To further add to the experience, grads with local addresses can expect a few surprises in their mailboxes and we will continue to communicate with all grads leading up to the event to share other great ways to celebrate.

We are looking forward to this opportunity to engage with friends, family, professors and the many members of the Humber community to congratulate graduates for their hard work and perseverance, and to take pride in their accomplishments using social. There is no requirement to sign up for this virtual event; all are welcome to attend. For more information, please visit humber.ca/convocation

Advisor Training 2021 is fast approaching, taking place from May 25 to June 4. We have an entire two weeks of sessions lined up for us to learn, connect and refuel our work. This year, we have two amazing keynote sessions you don't want to miss!

Tuesday, May 25 at 9 a.m.
Naming it. Reckoning with Our Truths.

The experiences of Black, Indigenous, and people of colour (BIPOC) professionals in the workforce are often challenging and nuanced, particularly for those with intersecting identities. Many companies and organizations express the importance of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI); however, the experiences of BIPOC communities tell a different story. In this interactive talk, we will name the realities faced by BIPOC communities and discuss ways that we can navigate the post-secondary environment, in a sustainable and healthy way.

Hosted by:

Natalie Elisha - Equity Projects Specialist, University of Toronto

Martina Douglas - Specialist, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, World Vision Canada
