Panopto has been Humber's video hosting platform for approximately five years. We are asking faculty and staff to visit panopto.humber.ca to review, clean up, and back up the videos currently hosted at panopto.humber.ca.

In support of digital fluency practices including file and storage management, we ask all faculty and staff to:

  • delete any videos that are no longer needed
  • download and back up any videos that are still relevant to OneDrive

The suggested deadline for backing up Panopto videos is the end of the winter semester.

Hearing voices and other sensory experiences carry stigma. This creates shame, isolation and lack of information.

  • According to CAMH, psychosis is used to describe conditions that affect the mind, in which people have trouble distinguishing between what is real and what is not. One in one hundred people will experience an episode of psychosis. Psychosis usually first appears in a person's late teens or early twenties.

  • Several mental illnesses can include psychosis as a symptom.

  • The Hearing Voices Network was founded in 1987 in the Netherlands to raise awareness and create spaces to talk openly about voice-hearing, visions and similar sensory experiences.

  • “A growing body of testimonial, clinical and research evidence shows that hearing voices is a diverse experience that is not necessarily linked to illness. In fact, the majority of people who hear voices are not diagnosed with any illness at all. Some find voices and visions an important part of their life.”

  • Watch Eleanor’s personal journey. The site offers a wealth of information, videos and personal stories.

To the Humber Community,

International students are an important and valued part of communities across the province. International students enrich the Humber learning experience, bringing with them unique experiences and perspectives to our campus and classroom environments.

There are more than 400,000 international students studying in Ontario, including 10,200 at Humber.

Yesterday, the federal government announced a temporary two-year cap on international study permits. There will be a cap of 364,000 new study permits across Canada in 2024. This represents a national decrease of 35 per cent in study permits from 2023.

Effective immediately, caps will be applied based on each province’s population and each province will decide the allocation of international students to each Designated Learning Institution. Applicants will also require a provincial attestation to study. Provinces are expected to establish a process for issuing attestation letters to students by no later than March 31, 2024.

Current Humber international students and those with approved permits are not impacted by this announcement. Study permit renewals will also not be impacted.

The federal government is also changing the eligibility criteria for post-graduate work permits. Starting September 1, 2024, students enrolled in programs through public-private partnerships will no longer be able to receive a post-graduate work permit. Humber does not have a public-private partnership and international students approved to study at Humber will still be eligible to apply for post-graduate work permits after they have completed their studies.

Open work permits will only be available to spouses of master’s and PhD students.

Spouses of college learners studying at the undergraduate level at a college or university will no longer be eligible for open work permits.

A workshop will be held for international students in the coming days to help provide answers to common questions. Details will be shared soon.

Humber’s Internationalization Strategy guides our commitment to providing high-quality learning and campus experiences to international students and prioritizing a global perspective at Humber. Our focus will be on continuing to support current and prospective students during this transition.

We will share any relevant updates as they become available.

Employee Learning to Support Student Well-being

Post-secondary studies and various environmental, systemic and structural factors can have adverse effects on learner's mental health and well-being. Generally, there are signs that a learner is struggling long before a situation escalates into a crisis.

Faculty and staff are well-positioned to recognize behaviour that may indicate that a learner is in distress and may require support. Being able to recognize the signs of distress and make appropriate referrals are critical first steps in supporting learner well-being.

The Responding to Students in Distress website and the Student Wellness and Equitable Learning Handout have resources for faculty and staff to learn more about steps they can take to support learners, as well as information about the “Recognize, Respond and Support a Learner in Distress” Workshop that is available to the Humber Community. Faculty and staff who interact with students are encouraged to take this workshop.

For more information about employee learning resources, please visit the Professional Learning section of the People(s) & Culture website.

To make these programs even more impactful, we are seeking your generous support in the form of swag donations. Swag items, such as branded merchandise, stationery, and other goodies, not only serve as tokens of encouragement but also help create a positive and memorable experience for the participants.

What we are looking for:

  • Branded merchandise (tumblers, t-shirts, hoodies, hats, etc.);
  • Stationery items (pens, notebooks, etc.);
  • Tech gadgets and accessories;
  • Any other creative and useful items that students would enjoy.

How to donate:

If you are interested in contributing to our College Entry Path Programs, please contact Miguel Wiggins at miguel.wiggins@humber.ca. We will coordinate the logistics and ensure that your donation is properly recognized during the programs.

Since these programs are offered throughout the year, we are happy to receive donations year round. Thank you in advance for your support and commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders. Together, we can make a significant impact on the educational journey of these students.
