Humber, you did it! Thanks to the hard work of staff and faculty over 83% of the courses running in winter became mobile-friendly, using Blackboard Ultra. Now most of our students can learn how they want, where they want.

Check out these celebratory videos from Humber Innovative Learning. Listen to your Humber colleagues share their stories. Hear what surprised them, what they learned, and what made them dance with joy!

Though the heavy lifting is over, Innovative Learning teams continue to support faculty with training events and self-directed resources:

We are pleased to announce that we have recently installed two electric vehicle (EV) dual charging stations, with the capacity to charge four EVs at a time, in staff parking Lot 9.

These charging stations are for the exclusive use of staff parking permit holders. Staff without a valid parking permit can still utilize the charging stations in the above-ground Commuter Hub (parking garage).

To obtain card reader access to Lot 9, contact the Parking & Transporation Services Manager

Humber encourages drivers to move their electric vehicles to a regular parking spot after four hours of free charging. If you choose to remain parked at an EV charging station, you will be billed $5.00 for each hour or partial hour of additional charging.

For more information about EV charging stations at Humber, please visit the Office of Sustainability's website or email sustainability@humber.ca.

Dr. Juliet Daniel and Kaiso

"The primary epithelial cell-cell adhesion system involving E-cadherin and its catenin cofactors a-, b-, g- and p120ctn, is perturbed in ~50% of human metastatic tumours, and this correlates with the invasive phenotype. Interestingly, the catenins also function as transcriptional regulators of genes involved in tumourigenesis. My laboratory focuses on the transcription factor Kaiso that was first identified as a specific binding partner for the catenin p120ctn, which is aberrantly expressed or absent in human breast, colon and skin carcinomas. Kaiso is a novel member of the POZ-zinc finger family of transcription factors implicated as oncoproteins or tumor suppressors, and currently it is the only known POZ protein with bi-modal DNA-binding and transcriptional repression activity; Kaiso recognizes a sequence-specific consensus, TCCTGCNA, or methylated CpG-dinucleotides." Did you understand any of that? You don't have to, what you do need to understand is that the Black students on our campuses are all capable!

The Faculty of Applied and Sciences Technology (FAST), Continuous Professional Learning department continues the Home Efficiency Retrofit Orientation (HERO) program. HERO is developed in partnership with Enbridge Gas and delivered in collaboration with different Ontario municipalities such as City of Toronto and City of Vaughan.

The Home Efficiency Retrofit Orientation (HERO) program helps homeowners incorporate best practice energy-efficiency upgrades in home renovations that improve comfort, resilience, peace of mind, GHG reductions, and lower energy costs. The session will provide insights on eligible rebate programs and topics covered include: heating/cooling systems, insulation, windows, hot water heating and reducing air leakage. It is geared toward single-family homeowners (i.e. detached, semi-detached, townhome house types).

This is a two-hour session delivered virtually, and free of charge to the homeowners.

Enhancing Institutional EDI Knowledge of Disability and Academic Accessibility:

  • Students requesting extensions as a disability-related accommodation are provided extension guidelines from Accessible Learning Services.

  • There may, on occasion, be exceptions to these guidelines for specific disability-related reasons (for example, when a disability-related reason prevented the student from engaging in the accommodation process).

  • With increased efforts to embed accessibility in curriculum, applying the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can reduce the need for extension requests. These include: breaking down large assignments into smaller components with respective due dates or implementing a “voucher” system allowing all students an opportunity or two to submit assignments late without penalty or rationale.

  • It is understood that there is value in structure, timelines and building responsibility in our students, but peer review supports pedagogical value in compassion and suggests rethinking deadline and late penalty policies.

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about extension accommodations.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

Oscar Peterson

'When the great Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson first toured Jim Crow America, he made a plan, and he stuck to it. Peterson said, “If the only way I was going to make it was to frighten the hell out of everybody pianistically—if that’s what it took to get the attention—then that’s what I would do my best to do.”

Footage of Peterson (1925-2007) making the comment appears in Oscar Peterson: Black + White, a new documentary by veteran filmmaker Barry Avrich that premieres on February 15 on Hulu. The film slightly recasts the great piano virtuoso. During his life, he was well known for his formidable technique and charming, even ebullient presence, but some of his peak came during an era of significant Black empowerment, and the great pianist was occasionally shrugged off as an entertainer rather than a freedom fighter, a blanket charge that even Louis Armstrong faced. But the documentary is corrective, dwelling on Peterson’s “Hymn to Freedom,” a song that was every bit as important to the Civil Rights movement as Nina Simone’s “Mississippi Goddamn,” though it is far less iconic. This song, and the fact that Peterson’s star has faded a bit in the music community since his death in 2007, provided Avrich’s motivation in making the film. - Martin Johnson
