Thank you again to those who joined us for the recent President’s and Academic Town Halls.

President’s Town Hall

Unanswered questions from the President's Town Hall have been clustered thematically below.

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging

As the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Taskforce winds down, Humber remains committed to the values and actions that are outlined in our framework. The work will continue in departments and faculties across the College and build on the momentum created by the Taskforce. Information on the latest initiatives, including the current inclusive hiring initiative, can be found on the Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion webpage.

Please find the recording of the President’s Town Hall here.

Academic Town Hall

Unanswered questions from the Academic Town Hall have been clustered thematically below.

Credential Mix
A comprehensive range of applied industry-responsive credentials is one of the key features of a polytechnic institution. Humber is committed to expanding our range of credentials, pathways, and recognition of prior learning processes to support transitions between high school, post-secondary education and employment. Further information regarding Humber’s credential mix vision can be found in the 2023-2026 Academic Plan.

Personalizing the Learning Journey
Re-imagining the scheduling of programs and courses to enable greater flexibility is a priority for Humber moving forward. Flexible learning approaches support the personalization of learning by allowing students to have choice in how, what, when and where they learn, thereby increasing equity and access to education. The 2023-2026 Academic Plan outlines additional details on Humber’s plans to create flexible program and course delivery options that support all learners.

Learner Experience Across Humber’s Campuses:
Each of Humber’s three campuses provides a unique learner experience. Students benefit across campuses from expert faculty, industry partners and a range of services to support learner success. Information on student supports and services can be found here. More details on Humber’s campuses and facilities can be found here.

Non-full-time Faculty Training Opportunities
As a polytechnic institution, our goal is to build career-ready citizens. We do this by developing deep levels of subject matter expertise through an active learning environment. New part-time, partial load or sessional faculty are invited to participate in activities facilitated by the Innovative Learning team to explore ways to support teaching excellence and digital learning. These sessions are a value-add and attendance is fully voluntary. To attend, complete the online registration form

Please find the recording of the Academic Town Hall here

Upcoming Town Hall

The next Town Hall will focus on Humber’s Centres of Innovation (COI) Network on Thursday, February 2 from 10 – 11 a.m. Register early today. Looking forward to everyone joining us in the new year.

Holiday Safety greeting card with lights and red stars

On behalf of the Department of Public Safety, please see the below holiday safety tips:

Around your home:

  • Be sure to salt (or use a deicer for) your driveways and stairs.
  • Track your packages, parcels and deliveries and remove the parcel as soon as possible.
  • When possible, have someone at home to receive packages.
  • Install a RING camera or other front door camera to watch for deliveries.

Vehicle safety:

  • Clear all snow off your windshield and vehicle before driving.
  • Lock your vehicle at all times.
  • Change your winter tires as soon as possible.
  • Place an emergency kit in your car (blanket, candle in a can, lighter, matches, flashlights, booster battery pack, jumper cables, water, energy bar, hard candies).
  • Check that your windshield wipers are in good conditions.
  • Top up your windshield washer fluid.
  • Do regular maintenance checks to ensure your vehicle is in good running condition.
  • Keep your cell phone fully charged in case of emergency.
  • Have charging cords and/or extra battery power pack for your cellular phone available.
  • Remain with your vehicle when warming the engine and keep doors locked.
  • Keep packages, gifts, purchases in the trunk or out of sight to prevent theft.

Traveling for the holidays? Be prepared:

  • If you're traveling this year, be sure your vehicle is in good running condition, get plenty of rest and be prepared for any emergency.
  • Stay safe on the roads over the holidays — and every day.
  • Prepare your car for winter and keep an emergency kit with you.
  • Get a good night’s sleep before departing and avoid drowsy driving.
  • Leave early, planning ahead for heavy traffic.
  • Make sure every person in the vehicle is properly buckled up no matter how long or short the distance traveled.
  • Put that cell phone away; many distractions occur while driving, but cell phones are the main culprit.
  • Practice defensive driving.
  • Designate a sober driver to ensure guests make it home safely after a holiday party; alcohol or over-the-counter, prescription and illegal drugs can cause impairment.

Toys and gifts:

  • New toys and gifts are holiday highlights for many children. Minimize potential hazards from new gifts by buying sturdy, well-made toys that are appropriate for your child's age.
  • Toys for older children may contain small parts or other hazards that may make them unsafe for young children.

 Holiday trees:

  • When buying a real tree, make sure it's fresh (you can tell if the needles are hard to pull off). Water the tree daily once you bring it indoors for decorating.
  • Place the tree away from high traffic areas and doorways. Make sure the tree is well-secured in a sturdy stand.
  • Place the tree away from heating vents, radiators, stoves, fireplaces and burning candles.
  • Keep metal, sharp or breakable tree ornaments with small removable parts away from young children.
  • Dispose of the tree as soon as the holidays are over, or as soon as the needles start to fall. Dispose of it according to local regulations--most municipalities have tree recycling programs.

Public Safety staff holding presents

On behalf of the Department of Public Safety, we would like to thank the Humber community for generously supporting our annual Holiday Toy Drive. Because of your generous support, many children from the local area will receive a toy Christmas morning when they otherwise may not have. In addition to toy donations collected at the Humber Staff and Faculty Holiday Party, toys collected after the event were picked up by Toronto Police's 23 Division and Toronto Fire who will ensure that they get distributed to children in need in time for Christmas.

Special thanks to the entire Public Safety team, especially to Cassandra Dias for organizing the drive at each campus. A big thank you to our friends from the Academic Division, ITS and Marketing and Communications for their generous support in helping collect heaps of toys to add to the donation bins. We really appreciate all the support from the Humber community. This year has been our best toy drive collection to date with 100’s of toys being donated. A total of 32 bags of toys were turned over to Toronto Police and Toronto Fire.

We look forward to doing it all again next year!

The Department of Public Safety wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday season.

Sincerely,

Rob Kilfoyle, CPP
Director, Public Safety and Emergency Management
