Indigenous Education and Engagement and the Library Recommendations for Treaties Recognition Week

Colonization Road discusses the roads built by the colonial government to bring settlers across the country, connect them with resources to create industry and create a nation. Many of these interconnecting roadways are actually named Colonization Road. Colonization Road follows Anishinaabe comedian Ryan McMahon as he travels across Ontario speaking to Indigenous and settler lawyers, historians, researchers and policy makers who provide history, context and solutions for colonization roads and their impact on Indigenous peoples. Along the way, the film sheds light on treaties and what the process of reconciliation will demand of settlers in the country we now call Canada.

The LGBTQ+ Resource Center and The Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will mark Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) 2024 and we invite the Humber community; staff, faculty, and students to join us.

About Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR)

Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20) has been observed around the world since 1999. TDoR was created by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith to honour and memorialize Rita Hester, a Black trans woman who was killed and subsequently since, this day is a vigil to commemorate the trans, Two-Spirit, nonbinary and gender nonconforming people’s lives that were lost in acts of transphobia and anti-trans violence.

On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we come together as a community to raise awareness about transphobia and prejudice resulting in anti-trans hate crimes and multiple lost lives. We also carve out time and space to honor and commemorate the loss of trans lives, particularly those of trans women of colour, that are often dismissed by mainstream media despite many being at the forefront of queer and trans liberation justice movements.

Finally, this is a specific day of significance to express our love and care for the victims of transphobic violence and trans antagonism through honoring their lives and personhood as a community.

Humber Polytechnic will be recognizing Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20 by lowering flags at our campuses to half-staff.

You can join in several events both in-person at the North and Lakeshore campuses to show your support:ShapeTransgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) Events at Humber.

Humber Polytechnic Public Safety Team

During the month of October, the Department of Public Safety actively supported Breast Cancer Awareness Month by organizing community outreach events and fundraising efforts. Over two dedicated days, we hosted outreach tables with Breast Cancer Canada representatives on-site to engage the Humber community and provide valuable information on breast cancer awareness. More than 1,500 community members visited our tables, demonstrating strong participation and interest. Additionally, our security teams wore pink ribbons throughout October to show solidarity and support for the cause. Our department set a fundraising goal of $1,000, and thanks to the community’s generosity, we surpassed it by raising $1,554—achieving 155 per cent of our target. This achievement placed the Humber team 10th on Breast Cancer Canada’s nationwide leaderboard.

On behalf of the Department of Public Safety, we would like thank the community for their generous support.

Rob Kilfoyle
Director, Public Safety and Emergency Management
