We are excited to announce the launch of our new Study Buddy application within Student Learning Services!

Study Buddy is a program that helps students connect (by course code) in order to study together.

Students are able to visit our platform and create, or join, a study group for any course at Humber and the University of Guelph-Humber. Students will receive an update when others have joined their group, and will also receive contact emails for each group member. Students can leave a group at any point.

We would appreciate your support in spreading the word. We've included a poster, and some Faculty Slides in case you wish to promote this opportunity within your course.

Why Students Should Consider Study Buddy?

  • Finding motivation to study
  • Tough course support
  • Meeting new classmates
  • Building friendships across programs
  • Facilitates group tutoring support

If you have any questions, please connect with us at learningservices@humber.ca.

For the fall semester, the Grab 'n Go at the Lakeshore Learning Commons (L1000) will run every Tuesday from 1 to 6 p.m.

How does the Food Bank work?

  • Members of the Humber community who are experiencing food insecurity or hardship are encouraged to stop by the Lakeshore Learning Commons (L1000) between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
  • There you will encounter a cart with a selection of non-perishable and perishable food items.
  • Allergen-free foods are also available and stored in separate boxes.
  • You can take what you need. It's that easy!

Can I help?

Yes. Food donations are always welcome and appreciated. All donations can be dropped off at Lakeshore's MED building, 3rd floor, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Together, let's help fight food insecurity and ensure all members of our Humber community have access to food.

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to share the upcoming Speaker Sessions for our Academic Integrity Community of Practice that promise to be interesting and informative.

Academic Integrity and Competency-Based Education: Opportunities, Challenges, and Best Practices.
Thursday, October 9, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Ajay Rampersad and Jennie Miron

This session will be held on Teams [to register, contact Jennie at jennie.miron@humber.ca]

As higher education looks to reimagine learning, competency-based education (CBE) emerges as a promising option that presents both opportunities and challenges for academic integrity. In contrast to the traditional education model, CBE prioritizes learners demonstrating clearly defined knowledge and skills rather than by “seat-time” or grades. Students flexibly progress through multiple assessment attempts, peer collaboration, and authentic problem-solving. This approach can reduce traditional misconduct drivers such as performance anxiety and high-stakes assessments. However, CBE also creates tension with existing integrity policies designed for one-shot, time-bound evaluations. When does collaboration (with peers or AI) become cheating? How do we handle multiple submission attempts? Drawing from recent CBE pilots in the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences, this session will explore these challenges while also highlighting opportunities for ways CBE can strengthen academic integrity culture. Participants will discuss best practices for adapting policies and creating frameworks where ethical behaviour aligns naturally with competency-based, career-focused learning goals.

Speakers:

Ajay Rampersad is the Program Coordinator for Competency-Based Education (CBE) in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. In this collaborative role, he works alongside faculty and students across various programs to implement CBE approaches that are both learner-centred and workforce-aligned. As a practitioner and advocate of promoting academic integrity, he is pursuing his doctorate in educational technology, exploring how artificial intelligence can support competency-based assessment and curriculum design. His research is driven by a commitment to creating more equitable pathways for learners who have historically been underserved by the traditional education model.

Jennie Miron is the Academic Integrity Faculty Lead in the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences and Professor in Nursing. She serves as an active member in the Academic Integrity Council of Ontario (AICO), is Chair of the International Center of Academic Integrity (ICAI) Canada, and a board member for ICAI. Jennie remains committed to the fostering of cultures of academic integrity within higher education, recognizing that academic integrity is more critical than ever amid the rapid changes presented by artificial intelligence to learning.

Supporting Healthy Aging at Home: Universal Complex Design poster with images of a kitchen and a bedroom

In collaboration with the Faculty of Media, Creative Arts & Design and the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences, the Centre for Innovation in Health & Wellness (CIHW) is bringing together students from Humber's Interior Design program to work with individuals in the paramedic, fire services, and OTA/PTA fields to tackle the challenge of designing for older adults to live healthily and independently at home.

This interdisciplinary and interprofessional learning opportunity will involve students working with their peers and industry professionals to design spaces that are health-centric, accessible for daily living and resilient for emergency situations.

As more people choose to age in their homes, we need environments that support health, independence, and safety at home. This workshop is one of the many projects that CIHW is leading that further solidifies our polytechnic approach - bringing together diverse perspectives to design innovative & practical real-world solutions through applied learning.

Many thanks to Professor Orla Keane and Program Coordinator James Bulger for collaborating with us. Stay tuned for more updates on this innovative project.
