Occupational Health and Safety Services

Safety and Health week is an annual observance celebrated in Canada, the United States, and Mexico with the goal of focusing employers, employees, partners, and the public on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace, at home, and in the community.

Humber College is committed to creating a safe and healthy working and learning environment for the entire Humber community. Every day next week, Occupational Health and Safety Services will be posting health and safety information in the Communiqué. Together, we can create safe workplaces and communities.

For this year’s Safety and Health Week, Occupational Health and Safety Services is excited to announce a chance to win some prizes via our Health and Safety Photo Contest! At the end of next week, we will invite all employees to submit a photo related to one of next week’s topics. The photos that are most applicable to the daily topics next week will be selected as the winners – so be sure to keep an eye on the Communiqué each day next week (photo idea tips will be provided throughout the week).

The In Transition: Bridging the Employability Gap for International Learners Through Integrated Solutions project is seeking the perspectives of international students and graduates in Ontario.

This research project aims to comprehensively explore the challenges that international students face as they transition into the Canadian workforce.

The project team appreciates your assistance in sharing this survey with international graduates from Humber and other public colleges in Ontario. Their perspectives are foundational for this research project as the project team works toward identifying the challenges and barriers that international graduates face when integrating into the Canadian labour market.

The project, funded by NSERC-CCSIF (College and Community Social Innovation Fund), is in partnership with the Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA) and Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto (NEW).

Questions of the Month at the ILSC (April 2024) - Posted on May 2, 2024

Posted:
May 2, 2024

Here are the highlights of faculty questions from April. These are not necessarily the most frequently asked questions, but helpful for all faculty members.

Question (linked assignment not visible to students): I have a link to an assignment and made it visible to students. Why can’t they see it?

An image of the question

Answer: The original assignment you linked to is not visible to students because it is inside a container that is hidden (either the folder or module has not been set to visible).

Question (HTML file and referenced files): I am trying to upload an HTML file and its referenced files in the Course Content on Blackboard, but it doesn't seem to work. Why might this be happening?

Answer: When you have multiple files associated with an HTML file, create a zip file that maintains the file structure, then upload it to the Course Content Collection (not the Tools Content Collection). Blackboard may not accurately display files from the Tools Content Collection, but files uploaded from the Course Content Collection will be shown correctly. (Step-by-step guide)

Question (Assessment due date): How can I accommodate students to provide different due dates in assessments?

Answer: For each assessment, you can set different due dates and submission limits for students. To do this, navigate to the Gradebook and select the assessment you want to adjust. Click on the ellipsis (...) next to the student for whom you want to change the due date, and modify the settings before saving. This gives the student a unique due date and submission limit. Repeat this procedure for any other students needing assessment accommodations. For more information, please visit our help guide.

Question (Test duration):I want to limit the test duration and enforce a deadline. The test must be completed by 4:00 p.m. tomorrow. While the test duration is 60 minutes, I don't want latecomers to start at 4:30 and finish at 5:30. Instead, I want all tests to be completed by 4:00 p.m. This means that latecomers will have a shorter time to complete the test. How can I achieve this in Blackboard Ultra?

Answer: You can achieve this in the Test settings. Set the due date and time, then select "Prohibit Late Submissions". This will automatically submit any ongoing tests at the due time.

Question (Gradebook): I was working on the Gradebook, and the next morning, I noticed that all the grades were gone! How can I get them back?

Answer: You can go to the Gradebook, and from the top right corner, click “Download Gradebook”. Select “Grade History” and check “Include deleted items”. This will give you the excel sheet showing the past history of entries in the Gradebook. You may have to manually record each grade that was deleted, but you will be able to recover grades.

Image of how to download

Please note that while grades can be retrieved, the submitted content cannot. If you need to access the content after grading, consider creating a backup.

For an assignment, navigate to the assignment from the Gradebook for which you want to download all submissions. Select the ellipsis “…” from the righthand side of the header, then click on "download all". Please see the following for more information: Step-by-step guide and Anthology Blackboard Help.

To back up students' responses to all test questions, go to the Gradebook, select Gradable Items, and click on the options next to the test you want to back up. Then select "Download Results". This will download all responses in a CSV file. (See Step-by-step guide)

Question (Respondus LockDown Browser): I used Respondus LockDown Browser for a test. I set the following two options: 1) to lock students until the exam was over, and 2) to view post-exam feedback and results. After the exam, the post-exam feedback reported “This exam session was terminated because a modified version of a blocked application was running on the computer”. What does this mean, and is there any detailed information I can pull from a log file somewhere?

Answer: There are no further information available from Respondus Lockdown Browser. However, this means that a program LockDown Browser blocks has been intentionally modified by the computer's user in an attempt to get around the security that the LockDown Browser provides. LockDown Browser has detected this hack, and then shut down. This modification cannot be done by accident and is not a technical issue. As such, we cannot further assist at Innovative Learning.

New and Improved Features in Blackboard Ultra - May 2024 Update - Posted on May 1, 2024

Posted:
May 1, 2024

Here are the highlights of this month’s new and improved features in Blackboard Ultra. For more details, please follow the links below:

Supporting multiple performance criteria in release conditions

Release conditions allow instructors to control both who can access content items and when they can do so. This gives instructors the ability to manage content access and prearrange materials. Previously, a single performance criterion was available for release conditions. Now, instructors can add multiple performance criteria for more refined control. Students can access the content item only when all conditions are met.

Reuse questions in Forms

Reuse questions, an option within the Test creation workflow, will also be available in Forms when editing or creating a Form. When reuse question is selected, instructors can filter and select questions from existing Forms within the course. Selected questions are copied into the Form being created.

Add question feedback when grading a test by question

When grading, instructors can provide question-specific feedback so students can better understand the quality of their individual answers. After scores are posted, students can access both overall feedback and question-specific feedback in the Gradebook.

Improved Gradebook navigation

The grid and list view buttons have been replaced with text links to improve Gradebook navigation.

Previous menu:

An image of previous menu

New menu:

An image of new menu

Weighted Calculation Improvements

The Gradebook's weighted calculation always distributed weight within the category proportionally. For instance, if a category held 10 per cent weight with three items totaling 25, 25, and 50, the percentages within this category were 2.5 per cent, 2.5 per cent, and 5.0 per cent respectively. Now, the weighted calculation allows items within the category to be distributed either proportionally or equally. This selection applies to all categories, giving instructors more flexibility.

Please keep in mind that BeeBee is still learning. While it conveniently shares support articles based on the prompts it receives, there may be times when you don't quite get the answers you are looking for. Remember that it will get better over time as more users engage with it.

After 34 years of outstanding service, Mary Alexander has decided to retire at the end of December.

Mary joined Humber in 1989 and has been a dedicated and valuable member of the Office of the Registrar ever since. Over the years, Mary has exemplified professionalism, commitment, and tireless work ethic – working almost every convocation ceremony since June 1990! Known as “the lady at the back of the hall”, Mary has been a pillar to the convocation ceremonies and many other RO initiatives, including, her favourite event, the RO holiday party.

Given how many events Mary has had to organize, and the fact she does not like cake (?), she has requested that we do not host a retirement party. Mary has some vacation planned between now and the end of December however, so please take the chance to wish Mary well when you see her around.

As Mary embarks on this new chapter, we want to express our deepest gratitude for the hard work and dedication she has brought to Humber. If you would like to contribute a message or memory, we do have a retirement book available for signing. If you would like to sign Mary’s retirement book, please visit the Office of the Registrar at the North Campus (LRC, first floor) and connect with sheena.persaud@humber.ca or tanya.reda@humber.ca.

Mary, thank you, for your years of service to Humber. Your presence will be greatly missed. We wish you a happy and healthy retirement filled with joy, relaxation, and tropical adventures. May your retirement be as fulfilling as your career has been.

Congratulations!

Please join us to honour Maria Soares’ 35 years of excellent service at Humber and to celebrate the legacy of hard work and commitment she leaves behind.

The support Maria provides to students, faculty, and staff in identifying and acquiring media resources has made an immense difference to library services and their success. As the recipient of the 2008 Support Staff Distinguished Service Award, Maria helped develop and enrich the library’s media collection, and she contributed to various library and college initiatives over her 35-year career.

Her listening skills, calm approach, professionalism, and understanding of user needs are well known across the college.

Humber College Community Employment Services Announcement - Posted on February 22, 2024

Humber College currently operates four employment services centres (HCCES) within the Greater Toronto area that serve clients in surrounding communities to achieve their employment goals. These are located at:

  • 555 Burnhamthorpe Road (at The West Mall)
  • 1700 Wilson Ave. (North York Sheridan Mall)
  • 1620 Albion Rd. (at Martin Grove)
  • 1345 St. Clair Ave W. (at Landsdowne)

These are part of the Employment Ontario network funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training & Skills Development (MLITSD). The current Ministry agreement ends March 31, 2024. The government has been undertaking a transformation of Ontario’s employment services and will be rolling out a new service delivery model to the Toronto region in spring of 2024. After careful consideration and deliberation, Humber has made the difficult decision not to apply for funding under the new model. As a result, all four of Humber’s Community Employment Centres will close their doors come March 31, 2024.

HCCES has been delivering employment supports to Humber’s surrounding in-need communities for more than 25 years. Humber’s work in this space has come to be highly regarded by government, other service providers in the region, local community partners, and provincially by other Colleges delivering similar programs. The HCCES team is viewed in those networks as experts when it comes to supporting a diverse multi-barriered client group and helping them actualize their employment goals. Their impact on our local communities has been significant, meaningful and mobilizing. I cannot thank them enough for their passion and commitment to their clients and for the difference they have made in their lives. I thank them also for making Humber better through their work, the knowledge they shared, and their advocacy.

As this team prepares for the next step in their career journey, we encourage you to connect and learn about the exceptional work in which they have been engaged. We thank you in advance for the support we know you will extend to these members of the Humber family during this critical point of transition in their time at Humber.
