Welcome to International Education Week (IEW)! Each November, IEW celebrates the power of global learning to transform lives, strengthen communities, and expand opportunities. Celebrated in 80+ countries, including Canada, IEW underscores how international education prepares learners to thrive in an interconnected and rapidly changing world.

At Humber Polytechnic, this message aligns closely with our “Building Brilliance” vision — equipping students to be adaptable, productive, and globally minded professionals who contribute meaningfully to their fields and communities. For IEW 2025, Humber is focusing on the central theme of “employability” - how global experiences not only enhance career readiness but also drive innovation and productivity in the modern workforce.
International education fosters these qualities. Whether in our classrooms on campus, studies abroad, COIL virtual exchanges, global internships, research, or international development projects, students gain intercultural fluency, critical thinking skills, and a capacity for innovation that enhances both their employability and productivity. According to the Canadian Bureau of International Education, graduates with international learning experiences demonstrate higher adaptability, stronger leadership, and more efficient teamwork - all key to sustaining productive workplaces and communities.

As Canada and the world navigate shared challenges — from digital transformation to sustainability — the demand for globally competent, highly productive professionals and strong partnerships between industry and education has never been greater. International Education Week is both a celebration and a call to action: a reminder that international education does more than prepare students for careers - it empowers them to live as active global citizens who perform, lead, and innovate at the highest level.

Together, we are Building Brilliance - locally, nationally, and globally.

Poster for CCSIF Recruitment.

The Centre for Innovation in Health and Wellness (CIHW) is launching an NSERC-funded research project exploring the impact of precarious employment on students, and we need student voices to be a central part of this project.

We're exploring the effects of precarious employment on students — understanding how job insecurity, irregular hours, and unstable work impact student mental health and well-being.

We're looking for Humber students to complete a 20-minute survey and share their experiences. Participation will help us better understand the challenges students face and inform changes that can make a real difference.

In appreciation of their time, all participants who complete the survey will receive a gift card!

Over the next few weeks, we'll be at Humber's North, Lakeshore, and Downtown campuses to recruit participants. Please view our flyer for recruitment event dates.

Faculty and staff, please share the attached flyer with your students.

Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) is pleased to announce the publication of “Curiosity to Confidence with the AI Hub” by Victoria Chen, PhD; Ashnaa Narumathan, BASc, and Siobhan O’Donoghue, BAA

Abstract:

In response to increasing curiosity, confusion, and concern about generative artificial intelligence (AI), the authors launched the AI Hub at the University of Guelph-Humber during the 2024–2025 academic year. Designed as a physical booth in a high-traffic area of campus, the AI Hub served as a welcoming space where students, instructors, and staff could explore the practical and ethical dimensions of AI through informal, hands-on interactions. Weekly activities ranged from live demonstrations to guided discussions and resource sharing, aiming to make AI approachable and meaningful for academic, personal, and professional use. These encounters encouraged dialogue and reflection, fostering a deeper understanding of AI’s capabilities and limitations. This paper describes the development and implementation of the AI Hub, offering insight into both the logistics and outcomes of this initiative. Over the course of the year, the AI Hub engaged more than 500 members on campus and over 18,000 views on videos on social media, suggesting strong interest and growing demand for accessible AI education. Reflections from the student research assistants who operated the booth revealed four key themes: shifting from fear to empowerment, creating safe spaces for open conversation, bridging understanding through practical tools, and reshaping their own perspectives on AI’s role in their future careers.

This article offers a replicable, low-barrier model for engaging campus communities in ethical AI exploration and concludes with recommendations for institutions seeking to build confidence, curiosity, and critical awareness around AI technologies.

We are pleased to announce that Francis Syms will lead Humber Polytechnic’s newly launched School of Clean Energy. In this role, Francis will guide the development of the school while continuing to oversee the Information & Communication Technology (ICT) portfolio within the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology (FAST).

The School of Clean Energy reflects Humber Polytechnic’s commitment to preparing learners for Canada’s transition to a net-zero future. As global electricity demand grows, driven by AI, data centres, and widespread electrification, the school brings together skilled trades, engineering, and ICT to develop talent ready grads for emerging fields such as nuclear and renewable energy, smart grids, battery storage, cybersecurity, and AI-driven energy systems.

This initiative builds on the strong foundation already in place across FAST, connecting existing expertise and programs under a shared vision for sustainability and innovation.

Recognized as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for ten consecutive years, Humber is leveraging its award-winning campus as a living lab to advance applied learning and innovation. The School of Clean Energy will strengthen Humber’s position as a leader in sustainable, intelligent, and secure technologies shaping the future.
