There’s a new way to give back at Humber

Giving Tuesday is right around the corner! On December 2, this Global Day of Giving will kick off once again, and people everywhere will choose to support the causes closest to their hearts, including our very own, Humber Polytechnic.

We’re excited to introduce a new way to give back to Humber.

Introducing… The Humber Giving Well.

From emergency bursaries and scholarships to specialized equipment and learning experiences, the Humber Giving Well showcases the many fundraising opportunities that will ensure today’s students have everything they need to build brilliance. And, whether you choose to give back through a specific faculty or department or explore the many opportunities for you to make an impact at Humber, you can directly support the priorities and projects closest to your heart.

But this is more than just a simple and fun way to give. With the Giving Well, you get to decide exactly how you want to help the next generation of Humber students.

Your impact, your way

There are two ways you can give back through the Giving Well

  1. Make a one-time donation — Choose which fundraising opportunity aligns best with your values or reflects your Humber journey and make your gift by clicking “Give Now.”
  1. Start your own fundraiser — Have a specific area you’re passionate about? Start raising support yourself in just minutes by setting up a personal fundraising page on the Giving Well! Simply click “Learn More” and “Start Fundraising” for your chosen opportunity.

More information will be coming as we gear up for Giving Tuesday. In the meantime, if you have any questions, you can download this helpful guide [PDF], check out these additional resources, or reach out to the Melissa at melissa.beauchamp@humber.ca.

The Humber Research Ethics Board (HREB) has an institutional mandate to conduct an ethics review of all proposals for research involving human participants which will be conducted within the Humber Community, with the use of Humber resources or otherwise under the auspices of Humber. The HREB reviews research applications to ensure that all ethical issues are adequately identified and addressed. Serving on the HREB offers an excellent opportunity for Humber faculty to demonstrate a strong commitment to the institution and make a significant contribution to supporting the development of a strong research ethics framework at Humber.

The HREB is seeking to recruit three new (3) full-time Members. Applications are invited from all interested Humber full time faculty who meet the following eligibility criteria:

(i) minimum of a Master’s Degree; and

(ii) experience in conducting research.

HREB Members are appointed for an initial term of two years and are eligible for two renewals up to a maximum period of six years. If interested, please submit a curriculum vitae to reb@humber.ca by Monday, December 1, 2025.

To obtain more information about what is involved in being a Member of the HREB including the time commitments associated with being a member, please contact the Chair, Audel Cunningham at audel.cunningham@humber.ca.

If your department would like to participate in the Holiday Food Drive in support of the Grab ‘n Go Food Banks, it’s easy:

  1. Contact candace.iron@humber.ca at North Campus or sarah.armenia@humber.ca or sarah.henderson@humber.ca at Lakeshore Campus for branded donation posters to affix to boxes.
  2. Ask people to donate non-perishable items for the Grab ‘n Go Food Banks. View the list of most needed non-perishable food items on the poster.
  3. Candace Iron, Sarah Henderson, and Sarah Armenia will arrange pick up of the boxes.
  4. If you want to consider supporting the Grab ‘n Go initiatives long term, such as supporting an additional day to run the Grab ‘n Go on campus, please reach out for more information. The Grab 'n Go Food Banks are a collective effort across campus to help our community.

Celebrating EDIB Champions: Humans of Humber

Belonging grows when we share our stories. We invite you to add your voice to Humber’s ongoing journey toward equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. The EDIB Champions campaign celebrates those who are making a difference—whether by sharing their own experiences or by recognizing colleagues, students, staff, or faculty who demonstrate leadership and create positive change.

Selected stories will be featured across Humber to celebrate and amplify the many ways our community is advancing equity and belonging. Join us in highlighting the champions who make Humber a place where everyone feels they belong.

EDIB Champion – Shristi Shrestha

“At Humber, I’ve learned that inclusion begins with small, meaningful actions — listening, sharing, and celebrating the stories that make our community unique. Through my work and personal initiatives, I strive to create spaces where people feel seen, valued, and empowered.

In 2024, I was crowned Mrs. Nepal Canada — a moment that was less about a title and more about purpose. I joined the pageant to be a voice for those who struggle to find theirs, which later inspired me to found Nepalese Canadian Pageant Inc., a platform empowering women who balance culture, identity, and leadership in a new land.

Today, I serve as Executive Director at the Women Education and Skill Development Organization (WESDO) and Senior Director of Women Empowerment at the Trillium Foundation, advocating for women’s leadership and community growth. Through my TV and podcast platform, It’s Your Show, and my program Diaspora and Beyond on Nepal Kanti TV, I highlight diverse voices and global Nepali stories, connecting cultures through storytelling and dialogue.

I’ve also had the privilege to emcee the 17th Himalayan Mela at Nathan Phillips Square, attended by over 20,000 people, and serve as Outreach Director for the Niagara Canada International Film Festival — all efforts to unite communities through art and culture.

At Humber, I bring the same lens of inclusion and representation to my work. Over the past two years, I’ve helped organize team celebrations, including Christmas activities and games — even though it's not part of my own traditions — as a way to foster belonging. As part of our Social Committee, I’ve helped decorate workspaces and create joyful moments that bring colleagues together across backgrounds and beliefs.

These small acts — celebrating differences, sharing stories, and recognizing one another’s strengths — have built a stronger, more connected environment. Whether sharing my experiences as Mrs. Nepal Canada, celebrating my daughter’s achievements, or talking about guests on It’s Your Show, I’ve seen how authenticity inspires understanding and connection.

I also love sharing my culture — from bringing homemade Diwali sweets to dancing to a Nepali song during Humber’s Got Talent to raise funds for food security. These moments remind me that authenticity isn’t about fitting in; it’s about showing up fully and encouraging others to do the same.

At times, the challenge has been finding the balance between humility and visibility — learning that it’s okay to take up space, to share my story, and to inspire others to do the same. But over time, I’ve found that Humber is a space that welcomes authenticity. The more I’ve shared my story, the more I’ve connected with colleagues who also bring their full selves to work. That, to me, is the true spirit of belonging.”

On behalf of the Office of EDIB, thank you, Shristi, for sharing your story.

We invite everyone to take a moment today to recognize and celebrate the EDIB Champions and Humans of Humber who are advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging across our community!

Dear Humber community,

Staff from Chartwells, Humber’s food services provider, are set to go on strike as of 12:01 a.m. on Friday, November 21.

Chartwells is an independent, third-party service provider, and their staff are members of the Unifor union. The collective agreement bargaining process is between Unifor and Chartwells. Negotiations are currently ongoing, and we are hopeful for a successful resolution.

Chartwells staff may choose to exercise their right to picket at Humber’s North or Lakeshore campuses if a strike happens.

In the event a strike, food outlets and services will be severely impacted, but will continue in Humber Residences.

Details about any other available food service locations will be provided in the event of a strike and, as always, can be found on the Dine on Campus webpage.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.

The Student Feedback Questionnaire (SFQ) is Humber’s primary mechanism for collecting anonymous student feedback on the learning experience in each course, every semester. This process reinforces Humber's shared commitment to academic quality and reflective teaching practice and facilitates the continuous improvement of the student learning experience by using insights gathered from the students' responses. SFQ results are confidential and are not used in employment or contract negotiations. This process reinforces our shared commitment to academic quality and reflective teaching practice.

Please review these important points about the Fall 2025 Student Feedback Questionnaires (SFQs):

  •  Some students are unaware of what a Student Feedback Questionnaire is and how it functions. To support students who may be unfamiliar with Student Feedback Questionnaires (SFQs) or unsure about their purpose, consider sharing this helpful video with them before they complete the SFQ: Your Voice Matters - Understanding the Student Feedback Questionnaire

ol {margin-bottom:0in;margin-top:0in;}ul {margin-bottom:0in;margin-top:0in;}li {margin-top:.0in;margin-bottom:8pt;}ol.scriptor-listCounterResetlist!list-c5f9fcfb-b6b5-44c5-a4d4-a5cdffdd0a0e1 {counter-reset: section;}ol.scriptor-listCounterlist!list-c5f9fcfb-b6b5-44c5-a4d4-a5cdffdd0a0e1 {list-style-type:bullet;}li.listItemlist!list-c5f9fcfb-b6b5-44c5-a4d4-a5cdffdd0a0e1::before {counter-increment: section;content: none; display: inline-block;}

  • You can include the above video link as part of an announcement on Blackboard once the SFQ is available in your course, or you can schedule 20 minutes of in-class time if you synchronously or in-person. Including information about the SFQ in your course ensures students understand the importance and intent of the SFQ process, and provides them with time to reflect on the feedback they would like to provide.

ol {margin-bottom:0in;margin-top:0in;}ul {margin-bottom:0in;margin-top:0in;}li {margin-top:.0in;margin-bottom:8pt;}ol.scriptor-listCounterResetlist!list-c5f9fcfb-b6b5-44c5-a4d4-a5cdffdd0a0e2 {counter-reset: section;}ol.scriptor-listCounterlist!list-c5f9fcfb-b6b5-44c5-a4d4-a5cdffdd0a0e2 {list-style-type:bullet;}li.listItemlist!list-c5f9fcfb-b6b5-44c5-a4d4-a5cdffdd0a0e2::before {counter-increment: section;content: none; display: inline-block;}

  • Also consider sharing an example of how SFQ feedback, or other kinds of feedback, have helped improve course content over time, as an example for students of what to provide feedback on; this also shows students that their voices are heard.

ol {margin-bottom:0in;margin-top:0in;}ul {margin-bottom:0in;margin-top:0in;}li {margin-top:.0in;margin-bottom:8pt;}ol.scriptor-listCounterResetlist!list-c5f9fcfb-b6b5-44c5-a4d4-a5cdffdd0a0e3 {counter-reset: section;}ol.scriptor-listCounterlist!list-c5f9fcfb-b6b5-44c5-a4d4-a5cdffdd0a0e3 {list-style-type:bullet;}li.listItemlist!list-c5f9fcfb-b6b5-44c5-a4d4-a5cdffdd0a0e3::before {counter-increment: section;content: none; display: inline-block;}

  • Instructors are also strongly encouraged to enable the SFQ in Blackboard. Students will be able to complete the SFQ through a link sent to their emails, but adding the SFQ tool in Blackboard provides additional visibility and accessibility to the SFQ.
