October is the Workplace Health Month and October 10 marks the World Mental Health Day. Today, we want to take a moment to focus on something incredibly important, our mental health and the importance of preventing burnout.

In today’s fast-paced world, the demands of work, personal responsibilities, and everyday life can sometimes feel overwhelming. Burnout doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a gradual process that builds over time when prolonged stress and a lack of balance begin to take a toll on both our mental and physical well-being.

The good news is that burnout is preventable. By staying connected and using the right tools and support, we can protect our mental health and build resilience.

Homewood Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) offers a wide range of confidential services to help you manage stress, improve mental health, and prevent burnout. These include:

  • Counselling services to support you through stress, anxiety, or burnout.
  • The Life Smart Coaching Program: Burnout and Stress Solutions.
  • The online Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Program.
  • A rich library of on-demand articles, webinars, and podcasts to deepen your understanding of mental health and burnout prevention.
  • Pulse Check and Wellness History, a personalized tool for tracking your wellbeing.

Full-time employees and Regular Part-Time (RPT) Support Staff and their immediate family have access to the EFAP services and support. You can contact Homewood at 1-800-663-1142 or visit the Homewood website to access their online resources. Please follow this Registration Video Tutorial to create an account and access Homewood’s website and online resources.

Part-time/contract employees who need counselling support should contact oe@humber.ca for assistance.

For more information on well-being resources for employees and students, visit Humber’s online Healthy Community Hub. For a list of mental health resources that are available to students, refer to the Student Mental Health Supports Communique announcement.

If you have any questions, please contact oe@humber.ca.

Taking care of your mental health is essential. Let’s continue to support one another and make mental health and well-being a priority.

Humber’s commitment to driving climate action has earned international recognition by the 2025 International Green Gown Awards, where we were named Highly Commended in the Creating Impact category.

Humber was recognized for its Green Building Standards — a framework that sets stringent sustainability requirements for all new construction and renovation projects on campus. Developed through a collaboration between Capital Development & Facilities Management and the Office of Sustainability, the standards go beyond existing building regulations by mandating zero-carbon design, electrification, and occupant health and wellness features across every project scale. This initiative ensures every new space at Humber contributes directly to our sustainability and net-zero emissions goals, while focusing on resilience for the future.

What set Humber’s work apart was its open, scalable design. The Humber Green Building Standards were intentionally created as a publicly available resource, which can be adapted to any organization or sector, anywhere in the world. Built as a bolt-on to local regulations, the framework helps others raise the bar on sustainable design and construction, accelerating collective progress toward a low-carbon future.

This recognition places Humber among a global network of institutions driving the future of sustainable buildings, reinforcing our role as a leader in the transition to a low-carbon tomorrow.

As the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and gold, this seasonal transformation reflects our return to the fall academic term — a time when we push the boundaries of research and innovation through forward-thinking initiatives at Humber.

In the OctoberFAST Times, Dean, Shaun Ghafari highlights the exciting initiatives in the School of Engineering including the new Master of Engineering in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and a special spotlight on three students of the inaugural Bachelor of Engineering Class of 2026 who just completed their 12-month co-op experience.

We have many more compelling stories on the following pages, including snapshots captured at the launch of the STEAM Academy at the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation where we are inspiring future prospective Humber students.

Warm regards,

Paul Griffin

To the Humber Community,

The College Employer Council has posted "What are the issues? What has been offered?" on its site.

Please Note:

The College Employer Council (CEC) is the government mandated bargaining agent for the 24 Ontario publicly funded Colleges that negotiate collective agreements with unionized staff. This information is being distributed on behalf of the CEC.

We recognize that bargaining updates may contain strong language and reflect the perspectives of the parties involved. While the message above is a direct release from the CEC, our goal in sharing it is to keep our community informed of developments that may impact operations and the student experience.

We remain committed to respectful dialogue, transparency, and supporting all members of our campus community during this time. We will continue to provide updates as they become available and encourage everyone to stay informed through official channels.
