First Five-Day Simulation Session

First Five-Day Simulation Session

The first five-day Simulation Session for our first group of learners recently concluded.

We would like to thank participants for their enthusiasm as they applied information and knowledge from their eLearning courses to live, practical scenarios. Led by facilitators who are experts in real estate, these classroom-based Simulation Sessions are one of the most innovative components of the new Real Estate Salesperson Program. These mandatory Simulations provide learners with the opportunity to practice various elements of real estate transactions.

Here’s what learners had to say about their experience in Simulation Session 1:

“Our instructors have been fantastic at breaking things down step-by-step and using pertinent examples from their vast experience to build our knowledge, understanding and confidence as future real estate salespeople.”

“Great experienced facilitators helped guide us through real-life scenarios. Overall, a valuable learning experience and a surprisingly excellent opportunity to network with other students and salespeople-to-be.”

Complement eLearning with Facilitated Review Sessions

Complement eLearning with Facilitated Review Sessions

We understand that individuals have different learning styles. One way of adding to your learning experience is by participating in an in-person or virtual Facilitated Review Session (FRS).

These optional sessions are designed to provide learners with coaching and direction on the more complex areas of the program. Feedback from learners indicates that having the opportunity to review eLearning course materials with an experienced Real Estate professional has helped to learn and understand concepts and to prepare for exams. They also provide an opportunity to build your network and learn with others in a supportive community.

There are fourteen sessions in total. Courses 2, 3 and 4 have seven, three and four Facilitated Review Sessions, respectively. The FRS is optional to learners who are looking for additional support and are available for a modest price. Learners should select the FRS option when first registering for a Course.

Each individual FRS is three hours long. All sessions address some of the more complex concepts in the e-learning courses under the guidance of an expert facilitator. Activities include small group work, individual activities, guided reviews and debriefs.

Simulation Session Availability

Simulation Session Availability

Since the launch of virtual Simulation1 on July 6, 2020, and virtual Simulation2 on August 4, 2020, Humber has welcomed hundreds of learners per month to both weekday and weekend Simulation Sessions.

Recently, the program has experienced an increased demand for weekend sessions. Our administration team has adjusted demand projections and planning to enhance weekend capacity for Simulation Sessions. We monitor learner demand daily and add sessions in keeping with resource and timeline considerations. Scheduling decisions involve, for example, the advanced planning for the real estate professionals who have been carefully selected as your facilitators. In addition, the complexity around the variability of learner progression means that you may need to wait for both Exams and Simulation Sessions. A gentle reminder that once sections and waitlist(s) are full, they do not appear on the registration system.

Please note that the program pre-requisite structure has been reinstated, as indicated by our regulatory body, and it is Humber’s responsibility to ensure compliance. Prior to registering in any given Course, Exam, or Simulation Session, learners must successfully complete the corresponding pre-requisite. For example, before registering in Exam 1, a learner must successfully complete Course 1. Similarly, before registering in Course 2, a learner must pass Exam 1; and so on.

We hope that the above scheduling insights will help build understanding that there may be ‘buffer’ time required between program elements while keeping in mind the pre-requisite structure. Please visit www.humber.ca/realestate pre-registration phase or the Real Estate Salesperson Program Path for more information about program progression.

Tips & Tricks for Internet Connection

Tips & Tricks for Internet Connection

Choppy or distorted internet connections may be happening due to your geographic location and/or overall internet usage, among other reasons.

To help with staying online reliably, our IT and Online Learning teams offer these suggestions:

  • Plan for your meetings and try to join from a location with a reliable, fast, wired internet connection
    • We recommend using an ethernet cable for a wired connection.
    • This cable would connect from your modem straight to your laptop or computer.
  • Mute your microphone when you do NOT need to speak.
    • For example, using a platform such as Zoom, WebEx or Teams will devote a part of your internet connection to audio stream even when you are not speaking. By muting your microphone, you will allow your platform to utilize your internet connection more effectively.
  • Reduce your video resolution settings, especially during proctored exams. Please follow the steps below (these steps may vary depending on what type of personal device you are using).
    • Click “Settings” or the setting icon
    • Click on “Apps”
    • Click on “Video Playback”
    • Check off the box stating “I prefer video to play at a lower resolution”
    • Turn off “Automatically process video to enhance it”
      • OR
    • Click on “Settings”
    • Click on “System”
    • Click on “Display”
    • Click on “Windows HD Colour Settings”
    • Turn off “Stream HDR video”
  • FOR THOSE USING ZOOM: Adjust your HD video in Zoom, please follow the steps below (other online platforms will have similar settings options).
  • From Zoom:
    o   Click the "Home" tab
    o   Click "Settings"
o   In the Settings window that opens:
    • Click the "Video" tab
    • Uncheck "Enable HD"
    • Close the Settings window
  • Close other unnecessary applications on your computer.
    • Platforms, such as Zoom, WebEx or Teams, use significant memory and processing power.  Closing other applications, like Netflix or YouTube, will help with your connection.
  • Do NOT start other bandwidth-intensive activities before your video meeting. This will help avoid sharing your internet connection.
    •  Bandwidth-intensive activities include:
      • Large downloads or uploads
      • Streaming videos (e.g. Netflix, YouTube)
      • Gaming systems
      • Cloud backups
      • Cloud file synchronizations
  • Reset your router and modem, if separate, to give your device a break and refresh your internet connection.
  • Reposition your router so that it is closer to where you use the internet the most.
    • This will help with signal reach and internet connection. For larger homes or workspaces, you may also wish to consider using a WIFI extender.
  • When possible, hardwire your laptop, or computer, to a cable connection like an Ethernet. The hard-wired connection will be faster and more reliable.
  • Block ads. Ad media slows down your internet connection.
  • Lastly, check if you have a data cap. If you exceed your data limit your internet provider may restrict your internet speeds.

Program Delivery Remains Online for Fall 2020

Program Delivery Remains Online for Fall 2020

As Humber and other colleges and universities are opening, they are doing so in a limited manner according to the ministry's mandates. (or ministries')

Subject to the guidance of government and public health authorities, Humber is delivering both interactive online and in-person education for the Fall 2020 term. To give you some context, 60 percent of Humber’s full-time postsecondary programs are fully online, and all electives are online. Our professional learning courses are all delivered online except for a few exceptions that are related to essential service programming. Humber is committed to our learners’ and staff’s safety and in-person on-campus learning will only occur for courses where it is safe and necessary to do so.

Seeing as the Real Estate Salesperson pre-registration phase of the program can be delivered remotely, both curriculum and assessments will continue to be delivered online until further notice to mitigate the risks to our learners and staff.

We know that this is not ideal for all learners. Our plans to continue offering the in-class component of the program online means that learners can continue to pursue their career goals, rather than put them on hold, during this uncertain time. We have heard from learners who have recently finished the program that being able to continue online helped them stay focused and engaged while completing their studies.

Regardless of delivery mode, our learners will have many opportunities to engage meaningfully with their peers and facilitators using different platforms and technology.

Proctortrack: Virtual Proctoring Update

Proctortrack: Virtual Proctoring Update

December 18, 2020

We are excited about the upcoming change to virtual proctoring as first announced on Dec 4th, 2020! Beginning January 2nd, 2021, the process to connect with Proctortrack will change.

Here are some important highlights:

  • The process flow has been simplified so you can connect with your proctor and start your exam quicker.
  • The Mobile Phone App will only be used to complete the room scan.
    • It will no longer be required to use the mobile phone as a second camera during an exam.
  • Learners who have already completed the Proctortrack onboarding process with the current proctoring system will not have to re-onboard when the new service launches as long as the exam environment has not changed.
    • Learners who switch computers between exam attempts will need to re-onboard.
  • First-time exam writers will have to complete the onboarding process and receive approval before they can complete their exam on their scheduled exam date.
  • Learners currently scheduled to write an exam in January 2021 can expect to receive updated instructions by December 23rd, 2020.

Our learners' program experience is important to us and we hope that you're as excited about the updated, simplified process, as much as we are.

Changes to Proctortrack

Changes to Proctortrack

The program office is excited to announce an upcoming change in the way virtually proctored exams are delivered!

Proctortrack will continue to administer virtually proctored exams, however, changes to the process are coming.

Beginning January 2nd, 2021, a mobile phone will no longer be required to act as a second camera during exams. The Mobile Phone App will only be needed to complete the room scan; alternatively, you will also have the option to use a computer webcam.  These changes will simplify the process of connecting with your proctor and setting up to write your exam.

Improving the learner experience is important to us and we are looking forward to the upcoming changes in the process of delivering virtually proctored exams. Further details will be shared in a few weeks.

Course Extension Announcement

Course Extension Announcement

Beginning February 1st, 2021, course extension requests will only be granted for extenuating circumstances.

Learners will be required to complete a Course Extension Request form and provide supporting documentation. Subject to the exceptional circumstances of your case, the extension may or may not be approved.

If an extension request is not approved, you will be required to re-purchase the course. Please note that regardless of any course extensions, the maximum 24 months to complete the Pre-Registration Phase of the Real Estate Salesperson Program remains in place, starting from the date you gain access to Course 1.  For the Post-Registration phase, regardless of any course extensions, learners must complete all requirements before the end of the initial two-year registration cycle to be eligible to renew registration with RECO.

Access and Availability of Course Materials
A reminder that when accessing courses in the LMS, three dates are displayed as follows:

First Access Date
•    Learners first gain access to a course on this date.

Recommended Completion Date
•    In order to stay on track with program progression, this is the date Learners should work towards to complete their course.

Last Access Date
•    This is the date the course MUST be completed by.
•    Once completed, the course materials remain available for 12 months.
•    Important Reminder: Course Access Timeframes:

  • Pre-Registration Phase: Courses 1-4 have a five-month last access date for completion.
  • Pre-Registration Phase: Course 5 has a one-month last access date.
  • Post-Registration Phase: Compliance Course and all electives have a one-month last access date.

Ideally, all Learners should work towards the recommended completion date, or earlier, when planning their time and completing their eLearning Course work. In the case where a Learner needs more time, then the Last Access Date applies. Extensions will require supporting documentation and are only required if a Learner cannot complete the Course by the Last Access Date.

We hope that this information will help Learners manage their schedule as they progress through the program. Please remember that course materials remain available for 12 months upon completion of the Course, provided that Learners complete that Course within the access timeframe.

To learn more about How to Access Completed Courses, please visit the Resources section of the program website.

For more information on program extensions, please review our Curriculum Policy.

Program Update: In-Person Learning

Program Update: In-Person Learning

Humber College recently shared information with its post-secondary students about expected academic delivery for Summer and Fall 2021, including a mix of in-person and online classes.

We wanted to share with you that real estate education programs delivered by Humber will continue to be fully online for the foreseeable future.

Delivering courses and assessments online for both the Real Estate Salesperson and Real Estate Broker Programs means that Learners can continue to pursue their career goals during these evolving times.

Humber is committed to our Learners’ and our staff’s safety, and in-person, on-campus learning will only occur for courses where it is safe and necessary to do so.

Regardless of delivery mode, our Learners will have many opportunities to engage meaningfully with their peers and facilitators using different platforms and technology.

The Program Office continues to be committed to providing a rich, career-focused education that prepares Learners for future success and we will provide updates as the information becomes available.

Requirements for the Virtual Environment Will Change

Requirements for the Virtual Environment Will Change

Beginning June 27, 2022, the requirements for the virtual testing environment will change. Stricter rules regarding the space/room where a learner takes their exam will take effect.

All learners will have to be seated in front of a blank wall when taking a virtually proctored exam. All existing exam delivery rules still apply but in addition, the following rules have been added:

  • An indoor, private, and quiet location (learners will not be permitted to write the exam in a room where a clear glass wall would allow their computer screen to be viewed by another individual).
  • Learners must be seated so that a blank wall is immediately behind them during testing. Any pictures, artwork or other wall hangings must be removed.
  • If there are permanent fixtures that cannot be removed from the wall, the space does not meet the testing space requirements and an alternative must be found.
  • If the learner is writing with empty space, or an open room behind them, the space does not meet the testing space requirements and an alternative must be found.

An updated list of exam day protocols can be found in the Examination Policy, please review carefully, and be prepared. Learners with virtual testing spaces that do not meet these requirements will not be approved by the proctor and will not be allowed to proceed to write their exam. All exam reschedules will incur a rescheduling fee.

Coming Soon: In July, virtually proctored exams will require the use of a mobile device to use as a second camera during all virtually proctored exams. More details to follow in an upcoming communication.

Just a reminder, in-person testing at various test center locations is also available and an alternative to virtual proctoring. Please visit the website often to review the options as they are updated regularly.

The Real Estate Education Program, delivered by Humber College is committed to the security and integrity of the program exams. Academic integrity is critical to our institution and all our programs. The real estate profession rests on a foundation of honesty and integrity. Our program seeks to uphold these values and provide learners with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need to enter the industry.

Regards,

Real Estate Education Program Office
