Group photo of ISW/TEP facilitators

Innovative Learning welcomed a new cohort of full-time faculty who began the Teaching Excellence Program (TEP) on August 18.

This year marks a special milestone for TEP, for the first time, the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW), an internationally recognized program, was offered as the opening component of TEP. The ISW is an intensive program that equips post-secondary educators with practical skills for teaching adults, making it an exceptional form of professional development.

By completing the ISW, our new TEP faculty cohort not only earned ISW accreditation but also began the academic year with a strong foundation in learner-centred, inclusive teaching practices.

Congratulations to the TEP faculty cohort who are now ISW accredited! We look forward to continuing the TEP journey with you.

As swiftly as summer arrived, we are now turning the page to welcome fall and another exciting academic year!

A warm welcome to all new and returning staff, faculty, and Program Advisory Committee (PAC) members. We're grateful for your dedication to creating an exceptional student experience, both inside and outside of the classroom, and for your ongoing contributions to enriching, informing, and positively shaping FAST.

In the September FAST Times, we celebrate FAST members who are the recipients of the President’s Awards and the FAST Excellence Awards. We also spotlight moments captured from our very successful inaugural First Year Engineering Orientation to ensure our students start strong and build their confidence to make their engineering journey at Humber a great one.

As the end of summer signals the beginning of a fresh season of growth, discovery, and learning, I’m excited for what’s to come and the new initiatives we’ll achieve together.

Welcome back!

Warm regards,

Paul Griffin
Senior Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology

Looking for AI and Academic Integrity supports? The Library has two self-paced learning modules available for LMS integration, as well as a new video series to support AI literacy.

Library Modules

Academic Integrity Module
Originally launched in 2023, this module takes under an hour to complete and introduces students to the values and practices of academic integrity through interactive activities, videos, and real-world scenarios.

AI, Algorithms & You
Launched in 2024, this 60 to 90-minute module introduces students to algorithms and AI systems, with a focus on ethical and responsible use.

Both modules:

  • Are Blackboard compatible
  • Are available in CourseLink for UofGH students and faculty
  • Provide a certificate upon completion
  • Have updated versions available for download

Faculty currently using either module are encouraged to import the latest version. Access the instructor guides here:

New! “AI in Minutes” Video Series

The Library has launched AI in Minutes, a series of short, bite-sized videos covering key AI literacy concepts. These videos are designed to be easily embedded or linked in online course shells.

Topics include foundational concepts such as algorithms and heuristics, generative AI tools and their responsible use, and practical strategies for identifying misinformation and evaluating AI-generated content.

Faculty are welcome to:

  • Share individual videos or the full playlist with students
  • Embed them directly into Blackboard or other platforms
  • Use them as conversation starters in classes

Visit the Library tutorial page for additional videos, modules, and resources. We welcome your questions and feedback at library@humber.ca.

We are pleased to announce that, following a competitive search process, Kimberly Daniels has been appointed as Humber Polytechnic’s new Dean of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EDIB).

Over the past 17 years, Kimberly has served Humber in a variety of roles spanning student support, student governance, campus life, and her most recent leadership position in the Office of EDIB. A proud Guelph-Humber alumni and active member of the Black/African Employee Resource Group (BA-ERG), Kimberly has consistently centered equity, belonging, and the diverse lived experiences of our students and staff throughout her career. In this work, she has also been instrumental in scaling and growing Humber’s Equity Hubs, including Black Student Support & Engagement (BSSE), the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre, and the Spirituality & Wellness Centre (SWC).

Kimberly is also a certified educator in teaching and training adults, a culturally inclusive educator, and holds credentials in 2SLGBTQ+ studies. She is currently pursuing her Master of Education in Educational Leadership, further strengthening her ability to advance institutional change through an equity and belonging lens.

In her leadership at Humber, Kimberly has played a central role in launching Humber’s EDIB Action Plan, advancing system-level strategies that align with the Building Brilliance framework, and ensuring that EDIB is not seen as a standalone effort but as an integral lens for institutional planning, program development, and measurable outcomes. She brings a deep understanding of Humber’s institutional culture, a proven track record of cross-divisional collaboration, and a passion for inclusive excellence.

Kimberly believes deeply in the power of community and collective action to shape and advance ideas. Her commitment to strong institutional stewardship, long-term planning, and informed decision-making will be instrumental in leading Humber’s EDIB portfolio into its next chapter.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the members of the hiring panel: Moriba Baker, Sarah Butterwick, Ian Crookshank, John Stilla, Shernett Bennett, and Elijah Williams — for their thoughtful deliberation, time, and commitment to this important process.

Please join us in congratulating Kimberly on her appointment as Dean, EDIB.

As part of Humber’s official Photo Identification Policy, all users of the North Campus and Lakeshore Athletic facilities will now be required to upload a photo to their ONECard (Avro Mobile) profile to maintain access to gyms, fitness spaces and athletics facilities. This includes students and staff of Humber. Humber ONECard (Avro Mobile) is now the only accepted method for entering; Lenel will no longer be accepted for access at the Lakeshore Athletic facilities.

This update supports Humber’s commitment to safety and secure access in high-traffic and higher-risk areas.

Deadline to upload: Sunday, September 21, 2025
Enforcement begins: Monday, September 22, 2025
Upload link: humber.ca/onecard/myphoto.html

Why This Is Required

In accordance with the Photo Identification Policy, individuals may be required by a duly authorized Humber or Guelph-Humber official to present photo identification via ONECard at any time, including:

“To access campus or enter a secure/controlled campus area”
(Photo Identification Policy, Section 2 – Use)
https://humber.ca/legal-and-risk-management/policies/general-administration/photo-identification-policy.html

Athletics facilities meet this criterion due to:

  • Controlled entry via access gates
  • High volume of student, staff, and community use
  • Supervised physical activity with elevated risk levels

In emergency situations (e.g., medical events), having a verified photo on file supports our Emergency Action Plan (EAP) by enabling quick, accurate identification and coordination with Public Safety Health Care Personnel and, if required, Emergency Services

What Users Need to Do:

Option 1:

  • Visit humber.ca/onecard/myphoto.html
  • Upload a passport-style photo and government-issued ID for one-time verification
  • Approval is typically completed within 24 hours

After September 21, individuals without an approved photo will be denied access at the gate. Athletics Staff will not be able to override the system.

Option 2:

Users can also visit the IT Support Desks at the North Campus and Lakeshore Campus which are located beside the Campus Bookstores at each campus.

Questions?

For Athletics-related access questions: athletic.office@humber.ca.

For ONECard, photo, or Avro app support: Contact the Humber IT Support Centre.

Thank you for doing your part to support a safe and secure experience for all users.

Want to help keep Humber cleaner and greener? Humber’s Office of Sustainability is here to support you! Through our new Campus Cleanup Toolkit, students, staff, and faculty can easily organize their own campus cleanups - on their own schedule.

We will provide essential supplies like gloves and bags, as well as the option to borrow garbage pickers to make your cleanup safer and more effective. You’ll also receive guidance on proper waste sorting and disposal to ensure your efforts are sustainable and impactful.

How to get started:

  1. Decide if you’re cleaning up solo or with a team
  2. Get in touch with the Office of sustainability at sustainability@humber.ca
  3. Provide the Office of Sustainability with the necessary group/event information, and let us if you’d like to borrow any pickers
  4. Pick up your materials and make a difference!

Cleanups are important because they promote a healthy, safe, and welcoming environment, while also contributing to a positive impact on the local environment. Our latest spring campus resulted in over 30 pounds of waste collected between both North and Lakeshore campuses!

Hosting a cleanup can be a fun group activity for students, as well as a great team bonding opportunity for staff or faculty. Additionally, the outcomes of your cleanup can be shared further with the Humber community.

For more information visit: 4 pager Cleanup Toolkit

Let’s all take collective action to protect our campus environment and become stewards of the land we learn and work on.
