About Employment Equity

The Office of Human Rights & Harassment invites all full-time, part-time, contract and sessional employees to complete the Employment Equity Questionnaire. The information that you provide in the Employment Equity Questionnaire will be kept confidential and will only be reported in aggregate form for Employment Equity purposes. In other words, the reported data will not contain any personal identification. Having up-to-date knowledge of our workforce representation will allow the College to identify where underrepresentation exists, and to target its efforts toward removing barriers that may exist in the College.

The Completion of Humber’s Employment Equity Questionnaire is Confidential and Voluntary.

What is Employment Equity?

Employment Equity is the term developed by Judge Rosalie Silberman Abella, Commissioner of the Royal Commission on Equality in Employment (1984), to describe a distinct Canadian process for achieving equality in all aspects of employment. The Employment Equity Act was passed in 1986. Recognizing that "systemic discrimination" was responsible for most of the inequality found in employment, the Commission outlined a systemic response and chose the term "Employment Equity" to describe the process.

Employment Equity is an on-going Planning Process Used by an Employer to:

  • identify and eliminate barriers in an organization's employment policies and procedures;
  • put into place positive policies and practices to ensure the effects of systemic barriers are eliminated; and
  • ensure appropriate representation of identified group members throughout their workforce.

The Goal of Employment Equity is to:

  • eliminate employment barriers for the designated equity deserving groups: women, persons with disabilities, Indigenous people, and members of racialized groups. At Humber, we provide persons with the opportunity to identify as a member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and as a Black employee, in line with the recent recommended updates to the Employment Equity Act
  • remedy past discrimination in employment opportunities and prevent future barriers;
  • improve access and distribution throughout all occupations and at all levels for members of the identified groups; and
  • foster a climate of equity and inclusion in the organization.

Humber College complies voluntarily with the Employment Equity Act under the Federal Contractors Program.
