NEW Format for Active Attacker Drills in September 2025

September 2025

You spoke and we listened!

Below is information on the new format for Humber’s active attacker drills. Please read it carefully to ensure you are prepared for the drills

Active drills are held annually in the third week of September at all campuses and locations. The active attacker drills will take place on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, SIMULTANEOUSLY at ALL CAMPUSES (North, including 30 and 100 Carrier and residences; Lakeshore, including residences and Humber Downtown) as follows:

  • The drill will start at 10am with a mandatory town hall meeting in Teams. All faculty, staff, and students (who are not in class), are required to attend this meeting. The link to the meeting will be sent out the Friday and Monday before the drill. Please look under the “Events” listing in Communique for the link.  NOTE: Since the town hall will start the drill process, there will be no live announcement via the PA system to advise the community that the drill is starting.

  • The purpose of the meeting will be to play the Run Hide Defend video for everyone to watch.

  • The expectation is that activity on campus will cease during the drill. All staff will stop work, and all faculty stop teaching to join the meeting. Faculty will be expected to join the meeting during their class time, if they are in a class, so the students can see the video as well. NOTE: We are mindful of the fact that some community member may be sensitive to the content of the active attacker video, as it shows a dramatization of an active attacker. Anyone who feels uncomfortable watching the video is free to leave the classroom or other space where the video is shown until it is over.

  • Once the video has ended, we will conduct the test of the mass notification systems, including the PA systems, Guardian app, Alert Beacons and Text to Speech speakers, and the Alertus notification that takes over computer desktops (NOTE: PA is not played at the Downtown campus as we don't have control over the fire panel there).

  • Once the testing is complete, an announcement will be made that the drill has concluded, and regular activities can resume.

  • The drill should take between 10-15 minutes.

Please note that during the drill, the actual active attacker message will be played – not a test message. This is to familiarize the community with the message they would hear during a real incident. DO NOT call 911 or Public Safety during the drill unless you have a real emergency.

During the drill, all activity on campus is to stop and community members should pay attention to the emergency messages being played over the PA system, where available, and displayed on computer screens across all campuses.

The day after the drills, a link will be posted in Communique and sent out to all community members to a feedback survey on the drills. All community members are encouraged to provide their feedback on the drills.
