The Department of Public Safety would like to make the Humber community aware that we have received several reports from students advising that they experienced hostile encounters involving an elderly male person, on or near Humber property.
The male is described as male, white complexion, 50-60 years of age, grey hair, full beard, unkempt appearance, believed to be unhoused, walks aggressively while ranting, swearing and yelling vulgarities to anyone in proximity.
If you feel it is necessary, you can contact Public Safety at 416-675-8500 (if the encounter occurs on campus), or call Toronto Police Service at 416-808-2222 or 911 for emergencies, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.222tips.com
The Department of Public Safety would like to remind the community:
- Do not engage with strangers if you feel unsafe.
- Don’t “flash”/openly display valuable items, that could make you a target of theft/robbery.
- Do not enter vehicles with unknown people.
- Don’t be afraid to offend a stranger by walking away.
- Add the Guardian App to your phone and use the Call Humber Security button for assistance when on campus.
- Be aware of your surroundings and of others around you.
- Buyer beware-if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Don’t get scammed.
- Make notes of descriptions of the potential suspect / vehicle / licence plate / what was said-asked / direction of travel.
- Call security, or police if off campus, to report suspicious or concerning behaviour.
- Security is available 24 hours a day and can be reached by calling 416-675-8500, or by using a campus emergency (code blue) phone or by using the ‘Call Humber Security’ button on the Guardian App.
- Enter a place of safety with other people/witnesses’ present (e.g., coffee shop).
- Walk in groups-avoid walking alone anytime, but especially at night-safety in numbers.
- Avoid dark, isolated areas.
- Campus Walk is available 24 hours a day, by calling security.
